74.000 domains unblocked again

The argument about “.eu” domains continues. The Eurid domain allocation company which had 74.000 eu-domains blocked has suffered a strong setback in current legal proceedings, as was reported by the pressetext news agency. By means of an interim order under a penalty of a 25.000 Euro fine per domain and per hour a court in Brussels prohibited Eurid from blocking the domains in question. Even though the whole matter seems to be quite confusing, the big number of domains which are now available again offer a good opportunity to many small and medium-sized entities of acquiring an attractive domain name.
However, Eurid do not consider this verdict to amount to a preliminary decision with regard to forthcoming proceedings against 400 potential fictitious registrars behind which Eurid suspect three wirepuller companies (Ovidio, Fausto und Gabino). Eurid believe that on behalf of these three companies the 400 registrars may have bought the domains for the purpose of professional resale. In order to prevent any abuse Eurid had 74.000 domains blocked. In the meantime Eurid complied with the interim order by unblocking the domains.
MittelstandsBlog think: This court decision will certainly result in attractive domain names being soon available for re-allocation. Among these domains there will be many generic ones for products and services. It is certainly worthwile in particular for small companies without market-dominating brand name to keep an eye on the argument in order to possibly get hold of such a generic domain name. By the way, it may also be useful to have a look at the websites of the three companies under suspicion by Eurid. More information is provided by the Heise ticker. GERMAN
