Online retail: Users are aware of the dangers of online shopping

In the United States, as many as one in four Internet users has encountered security problems when shopping online; in the United Kingdom, this figure is almost one in five. In Germany, one in every six Internet users (16.5%) reports to have experienced cyber crime.

An up-to-date survey conducted by the software provider ESET on consumer behaviour in Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States also reveals that just under 90% of Brits protect themselves when shopping online, while a third of Russian Internet users do without. In Germany, 91% of all those surveyed guard against risks when shopping online – the highest value among all the countries considered in the survey.

A full 71% of Germans rely on antivirus software or another traditional security solution when shopping online. One in five online shoppers even uses special software solutions to complete their purchases. According to their own statements, the majority of those surveyed are very careful when it comes to unknown online shops. The doubts are even pervasive enough that around two out of five Germans surveyed (39.6%) report that they never shop online. At the same time, however, one in five (20%) is prepared to order goods from practically any website.

When it comes to paying, the differences between the individual countries once again become apparent: in the United States, nearly half (49%) of those surveyed stuck with credit cards for online shopping, while in Russia, due to the weak rouble, the crypto currency Bitcoin is becoming more and more popular. By contrast, Western European countries prefer services such as PayPal. More than one in two Germans (58%) prefer to use this payment system.
