Data storage: Users are switching to cloud storage

The sales figures for Personal and Entry-Level Storage (PELS) in the third quarter of 2015 have experienced a global decrease of 13.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, down to 16.7 million devices.

According to IDC, this development stems from the increased popularity of cloud storage solutions among consumers. As with the number of devices sold, the market value of the models supplied has also decreased, sinking over the same period by 19.8% to US$ 1.3 billion.

Private customers are predominantly opting for products with one to two terabytes of capacity, which comprise 75% of the devices sold. Within the entry-level sector, which mainly covers SMEs, the best-sellers are mostly models with four terabytes and devices with eight to 20 terabytes capacity. As regards market shares, Western Digital (without HGST) takes the lead with 31.2 %, followed by Seagate with 25.9 % and Toshiba with 18.2 %. (Source: IDC/rf)
