Number of overnight stays down by 4 percent in February

According to provisional calculations by the Federal Statistical Office, there were 20.9 million overnight stays registered in places of accommodation with at least nine beds and on camping sites in February 2009 in Germany. This corresponds to a decrease by 4% as compared to February last year. In comparison with January 2009 the number of overnight stays increased by 1% after adjustment for calendar and season.

There were 17.4 million overnight stays by German tourists (-4%) and 3.5 million by tourists from abroad (-5%). The number of overnight stays in hotels fell by 4% to 13.4 million in February this year as compared to last year. With regard to rehabilitation and preventive treatment clinics the number of overnight stays reached 3.3 million (-5%).

For January and February combined overnight stays totalled 39.8 million which was a decrease by 4% as compared to the same period last year. 33.5 million of these overnight stays were accounted for by German tourists (-3%) and 6.3 million by foreign tourists (-7%). GERMAN
