German exports up by almost 7 percent in September

German exports increased by 6.9% in September to 87.1 billion Euros as compared to September 2007. Imports increased by 14.1% to 72.2 billion Euros. After adjustments for calendar and season, exports and imports increased by 0.7% and 0.9% respectively in comparison with August this year. The foreign trade balance surplus at the end of September amounted to 15.0 billion Euros as compared to 13.7 billion Euros in September 2007.

According to preliminary calculations by the Bundesbank, the German balance of current accounts closed with a surplus of 15.0 billion Euros at the end of September 2008 while this surplus had been 17.0 billion Euros in September 2007.

In the following more detailed figures on German exports and imports: German exports to member states of the EU amounted to 55.5 billion Euros and imports from these countries to Germany to 46.6 billion Euros. Thus, exports to EU member states grew by 6.2% and imports from there by 13.1% as compared to September last year. With regard to member states of the Eurozone, exports and imports amounted to 36.3 billion Euros (+5.9%) and 32.4 billion Euros (+14.6%) respectively in September 2008. With regard to EU member states which are not part of the Eurozone, exports and imports amounted to 19.2 billion Euros (+7.0%) and 14.2 billion Euros (+9.8%) respectively in September 2008.

As far as third party countries are concerned, exports and imports amounted to 31.6 billion and 25.6 billion Euros respectively in September 2008 which is an increase by 8.2% and 15.9% respectively in comparison with September 2007.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the figures for September 2008 are provisional ones while those for 2007 are final. GERMAN
