Retail trade turnover down in June in EU

In June 2008 retail trade volumes in the Eurozone and the EU27 fell by 0.6% and 1.0% respectively as compared to May. In May the change as compared to April was still +0.5% and +0.9% respectively. In comparison with June 2007 turnover was down by 3.9% and 1.1% respectively in June 2008. These are the findings of a first estimate by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

Monthly changes

Turnover in foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods fell by 0.4% and 1.1% in the Eurozone and EU27 respectively in June as compared to May. In the non-food sector sales were down by 0.6% and 0.9% respectively.

The data already available show that the volume of retail trade increased in four member states and decreased in 13 countries. The retail trade index remained unchanged in Denmark. The biggest increases were registered in Romania (+4.1%) and Sweden (+1.7%). The most significant reductions were to be found in Austria (-4.1%), Lithuania (-2.8%), Portugal (-2.3%) and Latvia (-2.2%).

Annual changes

Turnover in foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco goods fell by 4.4% and 2.4% in the Eurozone and the EU27 respectively in June 2008 as compared to June in 2007. Sales in the non-food sector decreased by 2.2% and 0.1% respectively.

The retail trade volume grew in nine member states and decreased also in nine countries. The biggest increases were registered in Romania (+23.3%), Slovenia (+5.7%) and Poland (+5.2%). Major reductions suffered Latvia (-8.3%), Spain (-7.7%) and Estonia (-7.2%).
