Sharp price rise for air freight

Prices for air freight transport increased by on average 18.8% in the first quarter of 2008 as compared to the first quarter 2007. This is revealed by the new price index for air freight transport which was yesterday published for the first time by the Federal Statistical Office. Particularly sharply increased transport prices into the Asia-Pacific region.

Prices for routes to the Asia-Pacific region increased on average by 25.6% compared to the same period in 2007 and even by 28.1% for flights to China. Prices for routes to South and Central America increased much less by 11% with prices for flights to Mexico increasing by just 6.6%.

These price rises are due to stronlgy increased oil prices which led to higher extra charges for kerosin by airlines.

The new price index for air freight comprises routes from Germany to 318 destinations everywhere in the world which are serviced by national and international airlines.

Only regular flights are taken into account and no charter flights. The index is based on the year 2006 which means that the price level of 2006 equals an index value of 100.0 points. This index is going to be published every three months. GERMAN
