There was a boom in the hotel and restaurant industry in February 2008. According to preliminary figures by the Federal Statistical Office, the number of overnight stays increased by 10% compared to February last year. There were in total 22.2 million overnight stays from which 18.5 million related to German guests (+10%) and 3.7 to foreign tourists (+11%).
Bigger cities were a particularly attractive place to be in February given that in cities with more than 100.000 inhabitants the number of overnight stays increased by 12% which is above average. In other communities the increase amounted to 9%.
The number of overnight stays registered in hotels was 14.1 million, while on camping sites, in holiday homes and holiday flats as well as recreation and vacation homes combined there were 4.6 million overnight stays. This corresponds to an increase by 10% as compared to February 2007. In rehab and prevention hospitals the number of overnight stays rose by 9% to 3.4 million.
