Less vacancies in the fourth quarter 2007

In the fourth quarter of 2007 there were 1.22 million vacancies in Germany, according to the IAB institute. According to the IAB experts from Nuremberg, the demand for workforce slightly decreased both with regard to the fourth quarter 2006 as well as the third quarter in 2007. Each year the IAB interviews companies and registers all vacancies available, i.e. also those which are not offered by German labour agencies.

In East Germany there were 227.000 vacancies in the fourth quarter last year which is 64.000 less as compared to the fourth quarter 2006 and 37.000 less with regard to the third quarter 2007. East German companies are said to take more time to recruit new personnel and make the respective decisions.

The number of vacancies in the west of Germany amounted to 995.000 in the fourth quarter 2007 which is a slight increase on the third quarter (989.000). With regard to the fourth quarter 2006, however, the number of vacancies fell by 85.000.

About 16% of all 14.000 companies interviewed reported on difficulties in recruiting new personnel over the past 12 months. Most affected were the metal processing industry (34% of all companies having difficulties), mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, vehicle manufacturing (22%) and the hotel industry (26%).
