Overnight stays in hotels increased by 3.1% in the EU

According to Eurostat, in the year 2007 there were about 1.6 billion overnight stays registered in hotels and similar places of accommodation in the EU27 which is 3.1% more than in the year 2006. The number of overnight stays by domestic tourists increased by 3.6% to 856 million while that of foreigners rose by 2.4% to 722 million.

Among member states most overnight stays were registered in Spain in the year 2007 (273 million), Italy (250 million), Germany (215 million), France (204 million) and Great Britain (178 million). These five countries combined accounted for more than 70% of all overnight stays in the EU27.

In the year 2007 the number of overnight stays in hotels increased in all member states with the only exception of Cyprus (-4.5%). The most significant increases were registered in Poland (+11.5%), Romania (+9.1%), Lithuania (+9.0%), Malta (+8.5%) and the Netherlands (+8.3%). The percentage of overnight stays by foreigners ranged between 18% in Romania and 96% in Malta. GERMAN
