Consumer prices up by 2.7% in January

According to estimates by the Federal Statistical Office consumer prices in Germany increased by on average 2.7% in January this year as compared to January 2007. In comparison to December 2007 prices presumably slightly fell by on average -0.3% in January this year.

The Federal Statistical Office said that its estimates could turn out to be less precise than in previous months given that currently a new calculation method was being introduced. The calculation basis for current estimates is still the year 2000 while in future estimates will be based on the year 2005.

The harmonised European consumer price index for Germany is estimated to amount to +3.0% in January 2008. In December 2007 the index had been +3.1%. In comparison to December 2007 the index fell by 0.3% in January. GERMAN
