Red tape to be reduced by 25 percent by 2012

On Tuesday the European Commission proposed to reduce administrative expenses of companies in the EU by 25 percent by the year 2012. It is estimated that this could lead to the EU´s GDP increasing by 1.5 percent (approximately 150 billion Euro) while at the same time creating more jobs and generating more investment.
However, in order to reach this goal member states and regional as well as local authorities have to cut down on administrative procedures. The new proposal is part of the new initiative called „improved legislation”. According to the Commission the initiative can already present some remarkable results. These are now to be complemented by a series of additional measures: among other things the Commission proposes to reduce administrative expenses by 25 percent by the year 2012. For this purpose it will come up with a plan of action at the beginning of next year.
In addition the Commission intents to introduce further measures in order to implement EU directives more efficiently. Thus, in future, if there are new guidelines to be set up, it wants to approach members states at an early stage of the legislative procedure in order to facilitate the process of reviewing the implementation of these new directives.
